“What kind of a painter are you?”

“What kind of a painter are you?”

This is a simple question yet I found myself questioning how I might answer. From my perspective I see the diversity of my paintings. I’m comfortable with painting watercolors and acrylic/multimedia, often alternating between the two mediums. The subjects of my paintings are also diverse. Subjects in my paintings include landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, portraits, abstracts, and many flowers and garden scenes.

Reflecting on this diversity in my paintings I recognized that my feelings are the unifying element. Paintings are my journal entries and capture feelings and emotions of the moment. Sometimes I paint from a place of joy, nostalgia, remorse, or wonder. Occasionally I aspire to capture the feeling I felt in the scene depicted and on other occasions I’m working out the emotion or emotions I’m feeling when my paint begins to play on the canvas.

Almost fifteen years ago my husband gifted me a beautiful portable easel and watercolor set as a birthday present. The aesthetic inclinations of my youth poured forth from the watercolors and every since painting has kept me curious, alive to the feeling of the moment. The act of painting takes me on a journey to understand the emotions within as well as how my feelings respond to changing environments and to my experiences.
