“Run as a Fragrance in the Spring Breeze” is dedicated to one of my dearest childhood friends YongJie, who was an excellent runner and whose spirit ran with a boundless energy and grace throughout her life. I remember one occasion in which YongJie looked so pretty in a purple hat knitted by her Mom. The purple lilacs of this painting, in the full bloom of spring, embody her beauty, kindness, and unstoppable spirit, honoring the memory of a young woman who died of breast cancer at thirty-one. YongJie’s vibrant spirit reaches me decades later in the fragrance of the lilacs blooming in spring.
